How to play Futoshiki

Read the aim of Futoshiki, then make your first move. Place 1–4 once in each row and column while obeying every inequality. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Check the rule that explains your first action. Look at what changes after your first action.

Twelve 4×4 puzzles with fixed starter values.

One thing to notice as you play

Locate the buttons and input area before beginning a long round. Use the on-screen labels to avoid an accidental restart. Notice the feedback after each input.

The challenge in front of you

Place 1–4 once in each row and column while obeying every inequality. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Try to explain the aim in your own words.

Start here and follow along

  1. Select an editable square.
  2. Read inequalities by their row/column coordinates below the board.
  3. Enter 1–4.
  4. Check puzzle verifies both Latin-square rules and inequalities.

The controls to know

Click or tap squares or graph edges. Number boards include a digit pad. Undo reverses the previous change; Check puzzle validates the solution. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Look at the feedback after the action.

Work through an example

r1c2 < r1c3 means row 1 column 2 is smaller than row 1 column 3. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Check the stated objective.

Pay attention to this rule

An inequality specifies order, not an exact difference. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. Keep the stated aim separate from side details such as animation or appearance. Progress is measured by the game’s own completion or scoring rules.
