How to Play Nim

Play Nim with the rules at hand

Nim gives you a focused activity to play in your browser. Remove the last counter on the board to win. Use the example below to understand a decision. Compare the starting position with the example in the Guide. Look at what changes after your first action.

Try a more deliberate round

Keep the stated aim separate from side details such as animation or appearance. Progress is measured by the game’s own completion or scoring rules. Make the next step deliberately.

Your goal

Remove the last counter on the board to win. Use the instructions to see which actions move you towards it. Review the board or playing area as it changes.

A walkthrough of the rules

  1. Player 1 chooses a pile.
  2. Remove at least one counter, and up to all counters, from that pile.
  3. The next player chooses a pile and an amount.
  4. Continue until no counters remain.

Getting comfortable with the controls

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. Read the example below alongside these instructions.

A closer look at one example

With heaps of 1, 2 and 3 counters, choose one heap and remove at least one counter from it. You cannot take from two heaps in the same turn. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Verify the rule before continuing.

Where a round can go wrong

Only one pile may be changed per turn. Compare the situation with the worked example. Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention.
